On June 19, 2026, the Department of Finance Canada announced a 10 percent surtax on global imports of canned vegetables, effective immediately.
This surtax is directly related to the safeguard inquiry that began in March, 2026. The Canadian Government has cited concerns over threats to the Canadian canned vegetable industry.
The Canadian International Trade Tribunal intends to continue the inquiry through to September 9, 2026, at which point it will provide additional recommendations and appropriate remedies. Unless extended, the provisional surtax is set to end at that 200-day mark.
Affected Commodities: Global imports of certain canned vegetables, excluding goods originating from the United States, Mexico, Israel, Chile, and developing countries.
Guidance on the application of this safeguard surtax is still forthcoming from the relevant government agencies.
