This is a courtesy reminder of upcoming changes to the use of the General Import Permit number 83 (GIP83). As a reminder, this permit is associated with the import of aluminum, and as a result of this change, the import reporting requirements for aluminum are set to change effective October 1, 2026.
Beginning on that date, shipments containing aluminum products that are classified under GIP83 must declare three additional data elements unless they fall under one of two exemptions.
The new required data elements are as follows:
Only shipments that are either valued at less than $5,000 CAD or are from Customs Self-Assessment Importers are exempt from these new requirements for the GIP83.
If your goods require a GIP83, then these data elements are mandatory. Importers of the affected HS Codes below are encouraged to ensure that their suppliers provide the necessary data elements with their Customs documentation to avoid delays.
As importers of aluminum goods, it is important to ensure you have taken the necessary steps to continue importing unimpeded when these requirements take effect in October.
