Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have announced updates to the conditions for the use of General Import Permit number 83 (GIP83). This permit is associated with the import of aluminum, and as a result, the import reporting requirements on specified aluminum products will change effective October 1, 2026.
In an effort to improve supply chain transparency and better align with US reporting requirements, shipments containing aluminum products classified under GIP83 (including specific HS codes under Chapter 76) must declare three additional data elements unless those goods fall into one of two exemptions.
New Data Elements:
Shipments where the total value of goods under GIP83 is less than $5,000 CAD are exempt from this additional reporting, as are Customs Self-Assessment importers.
The official Customs notice can be found here.
The publication in the Gazette can be found here.
